What is it?

Pre-conception counselling assesses a woman’s health before pregnancy so that possible risks can be addressed in advance. Long-term conditions, current medicines, vaccination status and family history are reviewed. Folic acid supplementation started on medical advice and lifestyle adjustments are important parts of this stage.

Pre-conception counselling

Who is it for?

  • Women and couples planning a pregnancy in the coming months
  • Women with a long-term condition such as thyroid disease, diabetes or high blood pressure
  • Those who had complications in a previous pregnancy or a history of pregnancy loss
  • Couples who have not yet conceived despite regular intercourse for some time

How does it work?

  1. History and examination

Your general health, menstrual cycle and any previous pregnancies are discussed, followed by a gynaecological examination and ultrasound.

  2. Tests

Relevant tests such as a blood count, blood group, infection screening and immunity status are arranged.

  3. Vaccines and supplements

Any missing vaccinations and supplements to start on medical advice are reviewed.

  4. Lifestyle advice

Guidance is shared on nutrition, weight, smoking and alcohol in preparation for pregnancy.

Afterwards and recovery

After counselling, you can begin a pregnancy better prepared. Where needed, assessment is coordinated with other specialties; recommendations differ from person to person.
