What is it?

A gynaecological examination is the basic assessment of the health of the female reproductive organs. After your concerns are discussed, an external and internal examination is carried out, and the womb and ovaries can be assessed by ultrasound if needed. It helps conditions such as cysts, fibroids and infections to be noticed early.

Gynaecological examination and ultrasound

Who is it for?

  • Women who would like their annual check-up
  • Those with pelvic pain, unusual discharge or itching
  • Those who need follow-up of a known cyst or fibroid
  • Women who have not had a check-up for a long time

How does it work?

  1. Consultation

Your symptoms, menstrual cycle and health history are discussed.

  2. Examination

Each step is explained beforehand, and the examination takes place in a setting that respects your privacy.

  3. Ultrasound

If needed, the womb and ovaries are assessed by transvaginal or abdominal ultrasound.

  4. Explaining the findings

Results are shared in plain language, and further tests or follow-up are arranged if required.

Afterwards and recovery

You can return to your usual activities straight after the examination. Mild tenderness or light spotting can occur after an internal examination and usually settles quickly in most people.

Frequently asked on this topic

Is an internal examination done if I have never had intercourse?
No. In that case the assessment is made with an external examination and abdominal ultrasound; if another method were needed, the doctor would discuss it openly with you first.
Is a transvaginal scan uncomfortable?
Most people describe only a mild feeling of pressure. The scan takes a few minutes and can be stopped whenever you wish.
